Posting accounts – Norwegian Standard Chart of Accounts (NS 4102)

Here is an overview of common accounts in the Norwegian Standard Chart of Accounts (NS 4102), which is widely used in accounting systems in Norway.

This chart of accounts covers the main accounting categories and may vary somewhat depending on the type of business and its needs. The account numbers are divided into groups 1–9 by the main types of assets, liabilities, income and costs. You must reconcile this with your accountant before you start using the accounts.

1. Assets (1xxx)

  • 1000–1099: Fixed assets (long-term assets)
    • 1000: Buildings
    • 1010: Machinery and plant
    • 1020: Means of transport
    • 1040: Fixtures and fittings
  • 1100–1199: Inventory
    • 1100: Inventory (raw materials)
    • 1110: Finished goods
  • 1200–1299: Receivables
    • 1200: Trade receivables
    • 1260: Prepayments to suppliers
  • 1500–1599: Bank, cash and similar
    • 1500: Bank deposits
    • 1900: Cash on hand

2. Equity and liabilities (2xxx)

  • 2000–2099: Equity
    • 2000: Share capital
    • 2050: Other equity
  • 2100–2199: Long-term liabilities
    • 2100: Loans from credit institutions
  • 2200–2299: Short-term liabilities
    • 2200: Trade payables
    • 2400: Public duties payable

3. Income (3xxx)

  • 3000–3099: Sales income (standard VAT rate 25%)
    • 3000: Sales income, domestic
  • 3100–3199: Sales income (reduced VAT rate 15%)
    • 3100: Sales income food, reduced rate
  • 3200–3299: Sales income (no VAT)
    • 3200: Export sales

4. Cost of goods (4xxx)

  • 4000–4099: Cost of goods
    • 4000: Purchase of goods
    • 4090: Freight and customs

5. Payroll and social costs (5xxx)

  • 5000–5099: Payroll costs
    • 5000: Wages to employees
    • 5092: Holiday pay
  • 5400–5499: Employer's national insurance contributions

    • 5420: Occupational insurance

6. Other operating costs (6xxx)

  • 6000–6099: Premises and operating costs

7. Financial costs and income (7xxx)

  • 7000–7099: Other operating income

8. Taxes and net result (8xxx)

  • 8000–8099: Taxes
    • 8000: Tax payable
    • 8100: Deferred tax
  • 8900–8999: Net result for the year
    • 8960: Transfers to other equity
    • 8990: Net result for the year
